Advanced Course

Pain Intelligence Master Class

Leveraging the Power of the Mind to Achieve Healthier Movement

About This Program

Pain is inevitable but suffering is optional. This 5-day mindful master class series is aimed at helping clinicians overcome the challenges of complex patient cases through a structured framework called the Edutreatment model. This evidence-based model takes pain science to the next level by teaching the “how to” skills related to harnessing and leveraging the powers of the mind to achieve healthy physical and mental behavioral change. Unlike the Level 1 or mini courses, this Master Class series emphasizes the advanced skillset of juggling the soft skills of the mind while integrating the science of movement.

This is essential for managing the struggle between central and peripheral pain mechanisms. While the aim is to eliminate suffering, the underpinning mechanisms of the Edutreatment model focus on cognitive and affective behavior modification to create optimal conditions for effective physical behavior change. The result is a reduction of pain and suffering while clients are actively focusing on mental and physical behavior change. This is FUNdaMENTALly known as “distraction.”

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe the 6 scientifically-based mental processes to help reverse the chronification of pain for the patient and help reduce burnout for the provider
  • describe how a movement-centric approach can prevent and reverse the chronification of pain
  • follow a structured and organized approach based on the integration of mindfulness and a movement science
  • understand how to construct and conceptualize complex and difficult patient cases based on central and peripheral mechanisms of pain
  • provide a graded exercise program aimed at addressing cognitive, affective, and physical mechanisms of chronic pain

Day Module Objectives
1

Module 1

Orientation to the Pain Edutreatment model - How to access the mind’s resources to accomplish more effective living in a world of pain and suffering

The Pain Edutreatment Enthusiast will be able to:

  • describe the 6 powerful mind-based skills needed to practice their craft more effectively
  • apply the 6 mind-based skills on themselves and their clients
  • realize how mindfulness can lead to a more joyful life of reduced pain and the elimination of suffering
  • achieve a new mindset that will allow them to evolve into a better version of themselves
  • understand how changing a mindset can be a transformative experience for themselves and their clients
2

Module 2

Pain Edutreatment model - How to effectively and efficiently navigate through the subjective examination journey using the Pain Edutreatment model

The Edutreatment Enthusiast will be able to:

  1. stay in control of interviews with difficult clients
  2. gather useful data while filtering out extraneous data during the interview
  3. recognize and categorize difficult clients based on cognitive and affective challenges
  4. manage difficult clients that are cognitively and affectively challenging to work with
  5. engage (not enrage) with difficult clients so that time is not squandered chasing after meaningless subjective examination data
3

Module 3

Pain Edutreatment model - How to effectively and efficiently navigate through the objective examination journey using the Pain Edutreatment model

The Pain Edutreatment Enthusiast will be able to:

  1. stay in control of the objective examination where the pathway is fogged by pain
  2. gather useful data while filtering out distracting data during the objective examination
  3. recognize and interpret ambiguous objective data results to make more effective treatment decisions
  4. manage difficult clients that are cognitively, affectively, and painfully challenging to work with
  5. engage with difficult clients so that time is not squandered chasing meaningless objective examination data
4

Module 4

Pain Edutreatment model - How to set up more effective cognitive, affective, and physical behavior change through mindful application of the Pain Edutreatment model

The Edutreatment Enthusiast will be able to:

  1. go through the 5-step process of getting the client’s mind to the “movement story”
  2. recognize clients’ cognitive and affective behaviors so that more effective counseling tactics and strategies can be implemented during the one-on-one Edutreatment session
  3. go through the education checklist so that clients are engaged and primed for a more effective cognitive, affective, and physical behavior change proposal
  4. apply the Edutreatment skills while confronting clients non-judgmentally
  5. take patient education, pain science education, and neuroscience education to the next level by enlisting the mind’s natural resources to empower the client for cognitive, affective, and physical behavior change
5

Module 5

Pain Edutreatment model - How to integrate a biomechanically derived graded exercise program to achieve effective mental and physical behavior change

The Edutreatment Enthusiast will be able to:

  1. instruct clients in a biomechanically derived graded exercise program to achieve mental and physical behavior changes
  2. revise exercise prescription programs based on the patient’s level of mindfulness
  3. integrate the Edutreatment skills with an organized and structured biomechanically derived graded exercise program
  4. apply principles of motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy during the exercise prescription and implementation journey
